2019: GOTTFRIED FUETSCH (1909 - 1989)

Bruck Castle Museum, west wing
June 7th to August 18th, 2019

Space and Soul

2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the death of the East Tyrolean sculptor Gottfried Fuetsch.

Born 110 years ago and raised in a farming family in Virgen, at the age of 20 he attended the regional carving school in St. Jakob in Defereggen, led by Bruno Costa. Following that, he continued his education as a sculptor at the State Trade School in Innsbruck, among others with Hans Pontiller.

His studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich were interrupted by military service. In 1945, he returned to the parental farm in East Tyrol, where he dedicated himself to sculpting in a small extension. At the age of 40, he resumed his studies, completed them as an academic sculptor with a diploma under Franz Santifaller at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1950, and finally returned to his hometown.

He gained nationwide recognition not least through numerous commissions from the church and the state of Tyrol. In his studio, he initially worked with wood, then from the mid-1950s he also dealt with the raw material stone. In his final years, he also focused on the material bronze.

The exhibition in the west wing of the Museum Schloss Bruck provides insight into his figurative work, which can be admired not only in the Lienz district but also in public secular and sacred spaces.
